I agree with Karen: both cataloguers and frontline staff should be involved with social media. It seems that the impetus for engagement quite often comes from individuals with enthusiasm, regardless of their role in the library, or even their seniority.
There doesn't really seen to be much of a problem persuading management - as Heather says, it's now flavour of the month - and above all cheap. I'm quite interested in the 24/7 workload of the enthusiastic individuals who actually blog, tweet, etc on behalf of an employer on top of the regular job -but too late in the day to raise that one!

I think both frontline staff and cataloguers should be involved. The front line staff are using SM to inform students/users about current things - opening hours/whats going on in their library/special events/weather warnings, etc etc they are best placed to know what is relevant and current. But cataloguers have things to shout about too - just different things! We (at Cardiff) have a blog for our special collections - its aimed at more than just our current students, we want people all over the world to read it - as well as our current students. So a different, but overlapping audience perhaps?

Before we're running out of time, I'd quickly like to throw some topics into the open that - I think - we haven't touch on so far:
Who do you think is best placed to use social media for their organisation (cataloguers vs frontfacing staff)? If most of us aren't involved in any organisational SM accounts, would we want to? And if so, how could we sell this to our managers (#hvcat)? If you have tried/done it what DID you do?

Thanks, Esther
