Anansi’s Journey: A Story of Jamaican Cultural Resistance
Emily Zobel Marshall
Mar 2012 | £26.50 / €31.00 | Paperback | 978-976-640-261-7 | 232pp
“Anansi’s Journey is the first sustained cross-cultural analysis of Anansi from
his West African oral tradition origins to his symbolic role in contemporary
post-colonial Jamaica. Part of the originality of this study is its geographical
and diachronic reach. Marshall argues that we need to read Anansi’s extraordinary
cultural longevity not only in terms of his continued cultural relevance
but also in terms of his cultural adaptiveness. . . . Marshall traces the epic
journeying of this most resilient and enduring of folk heroes with detail and
insight and her study is sure to become a standard work in shaping our
understanding of Anansi.”
– Sarah Lawson Welsh, Reader in English and Postcolonial Literatures,
York St John University
This interdisciplinary study examines the cultural and historical significance of
the Jamaican Anansi folktales. Anansi symbolizes key aspects of
Afro-Caribbean culture and is celebrated as a vital link with an African past.
Anansi stories, in which the small spider turns the tables on his powerful
enemies through cunning and trickery, are now told and published worldwide.
Emily Zobel Marshall traces Anansi’s journey from West Africa to Jamaica,
where he is celebrated as a folk hero. She demonstrates how Anansi survived
a cultural metamorphosis and came to symbolize the spirit of resistance of the
Jamaican people.
“A big question currently among historians is, Did the slave trade destroy
or transmit African culture? Well, here, with Anansi’s Journey, we have a
clear answer."
