ABSTRACT:
Cuba was the largest economy in the Caribbean on the eve of the Revolution. This presentation will look at the structure, performance and policy of the Cuban economy in the subsequent decades, during which there have been major upswings and downswings. It will examine the recent reforms and ask to what extent they will address the obstacles to economic progress accumulated over the last 50 years.
BIO:
Victor Bulmer-Thomas is a Visiting Professorial Fellow at the Institute for the Study of the Americas. From 2007-10 he was a Visiting Professor at Florida International University. From 2001-6 he was Director of Chatham House and from 1992-8 he was Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies at London University. He was also co-editor of the Journal of Latin American Studies from 1986-1997. He is the author of numerous books and articles on Latin America and has been working in recent years on the Caribbean. His latest book, The Economic History of the Caribbean from the Napoleonic Wars, will be published shortly by Cambridge University Press.
