Hi
Although group journal posts are private to each group by default, the additional option to make posts private *within* the group isn't currently working (i.e. so students in the group can't see each others journal posts).
We raised a ticket with Bb as we'd a large cohort on one course where the tutors wanted to manage the students in groups, and still allow private journal reflections back to the group's tutor. Unchecking "permit users to view this journal" when editing the group journal settings didn't work as expected.
Bb acknowledged this as a "software defect" and the last I'd heard it was targeted for fixing in 9.1 SP10 (we solved the particular issue using campus pack group blog permissions).

Simple
Blog - visible to all students, all students can post & see each others
posts
Journal - private to all students, all students can post. Students only
see their own posts
Group blog - visible to all students, members of the group can post.
Students not in the group can see it.
Group journal - visible to members of the group, members of the group can
post. Students not in the group can NOT see it.
