We are pleased to announce our March session, where our two papers will engage with issues of 'perspective'. Jen Calleja will draw comparisons between Michael Hofman's translations of Durs Grunbein and Gerhart Richter's perspective paintings, and Thomas Haynes will focus on formal innovation in early German cinema through the work of Franz Hofer.

'Ocular Games in Die schwarze Kugel (1913)'
German film pioneer Franz Hofer's surviving work both embodies and scrutinizes the early cinema's transition from an exhibitionist mode to an internalized narrative system. In Die schwarze Kugel, Hofer thematizes the power of the look, rendered in ways which are inextricable from film form, foregrounding the voyeurism inherent to the emerging storytelling mode while posing broader questions of spectatorship, self-referentiality and viewer identification. With this in mind, this paper examines Hofer's organization of subjectivity by untangling the film's point-of-view structures, revealing a system that is nuanced and psychologically charged.

'Agency, Presence and Perspective in Literary Translation'
This paper draws comparisons between literary translation and paintings of pre-made images as 'commentaries' on their source material, illustated by Gerhard Richter's 'perspective' paintings and Michael Hofman's translations of Durs Grunbein's poetry collection 'Ashes for Breakfast'.
