University of Oslo, Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages
Associate Professor in Religion in Modern China
A position of Associate Professor in Religion in Modern China is 
available at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages 
from 1 January 2013.
The holder of this position will teach courses relevant to the study of 
religion in Modern China at BA and MA levels. The holder of this 
position will participate in exams at all levels, and supervise research 
students.
The holder of the position is expected to initiate and lead research and 
carry out administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the 
Department.
The successful candidate will play a central role in further development 
of high-quality research and teaching in religion in Modern China at the 
Department in collaboration with colleagues.
Requirements
The minimum requirement for the position of Associate Professor is a PhD 
degree, other corresponding doctoral degree or equivalent academic 
qualifications documented by academic production.
Pedagogical skills and qualification in leadership and administration
Personal suitability and motivation for the post
Documented international peer-reviewed publications
Sufficient knowledge of spoken and written Chinese language to be able 
to use it in research.
  The assessment of the applicants will focus on:
Academic competence and academic works in disciplines that employ 
historical and/or synchronic perspectives on the study of religion in 
Modern China, with emphasis on works published within the last 5 years. 
Originality and innovative thinking are preferred to quantity.
Potential to contribute to a long term development of the academic and 
research environment at the department
Pedagogic qualifications and disposition to inspire students
Interest, ability and experience in management and administration
Collaborative skills and willingness to initiate joint projects
Experience with collaboration across established academic environments 
and ability to build international networks
Communication and public outreach skills
Familiarity with theoretical approaches to the study of religion and 
ability to teach courses at the relevant study programs at the Department.
Positive results in external fund raising
Documented international peer-reviewed publications
A selection committee will assess and explicitly consider the 
applicant?s whole range of qualifications. They will be assesed and 
prioritized in the following order: quality, development and scope
Applicants who at the time of appointment can not document basic 
pedagogical skills will be required to obtain such skills within a two 
year period.
The teaching language is Norwegian. On the appointment of a candidate 
who is not fluent in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish, the appointee will be 
expected within reasonable time to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able 
to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.

An outline of one or more relevant research projects:
The Department aims to strengthen its research profile in area studies 
through the study of religion, culture, language and history. Applicants 
are required to outline one or several research projects and show how 
these tie on to existing research and scholarly interests at the 
Department. The outline should also include themes for possible MA and 
PhD theses and for study courses that reflect the research interests of

As a general rule an interview and a trial lecture will be part of the 
assessment process.
An application committee will invite a limited set of candidates to 
submit a portfolio of educational certificates and academic works (up to 
10 publications, which should not exceed 500 pages in total) for further 
assessment. Applicants who are invited to submit academic works are 
asked to select three works, published within the last five years, to be 
concidered as more relevant for the position. The Selection Board will 
focus on these selected works. In larger volumes (monographs), the 
applicant may specify the relevant pages. The applicant is also asked to 
submit a portfolio documenting the applicant?s other qualifications 
(public outreach, teaching and supervision, leadership and administration).
Within his/her normal duties, and in accordance with his/her academic 
competence, the person appointed may also be directed to work outside 
his/her department. The appointment is made with the reservation of 
changes to the subject area and tasks that may be determined by the 
employer.
