The MRC Biostatistics Unit is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions. The post holder will be within the programme of statistical aspects of ageing epidemiology. This programme combines novel methodological development with direct application (by other post holders) to develop understanding of population health. There are many aspects of the programme:

. Using longitudinal data to model health life expectancies, including Markov models, simulation and population projection;
. Longitudinal data analysis of individual change in continuous measurement investigating the relationship between individual heterogeneity and risk factors;
. Multivariate models investigating the interaction between behavioural, cognitive and emotional factors and lifestyle, health and brain changes measured using imaging techniques;
. Investigation of the methods for image processing to understand fully the error in the associations.
. establish strong collaborations especially with relevant research groups in Cambridge, for example the Cambridge Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, Public Health and Primary Care, University of Cambridge.
. establish a training and dissemination programme for methodology in population projection, aligned to its research interests and those of the existing Unit.

The post holder has the flexibility to be involved in any of these areas or others within the field of longitudinal data analysis and projection of population health with a relavence on the older population.

The BSU promotes the effective linking of methodology and application, so that research is focused on important problems in applied studies, and that new and ongoing population based studies have access to the best possible methodological support. The research programme will have a national remit (and international presence).

The Senior Statistician (band 3) is now required to develop and coordinate a scheme of research within the programme. They will have the flexibility to direct their development of an independent programme within the overall remit of the MRC Biostatistics Unit. There are opportunities to work in collaboration with others in the BSU as well as independently in his or her area of expertise. This will require solving problems that entail novel approaches and the integration of different ideas and activities to ensure the successful completion of research projects.

The post-holder will collaborate on specific projects within the programme, assist with new proposals for grant funding, and develop training opportunities for research associates and PhD students. It is expected that, in due course, the post-holder will manage other junior statisticians and supervise PhD students.

The post-holder will have a PhD in statistics, or equivalent experience, together with a track record of published research in medical statistics, social statistics, epidemiology, public health or related areas. Evidence of successful working on collaborative or multi-disciplinary applied research projects is required, together with the potential to lead methodological research activities.

This post will have an input into the Training programme which will be developed with the following components: Post-MSc statisticians; PhD students; Post-PhD statisticians; Workshops and courses; Visitors to the BSU. The post-holder will have the opportunity to supervise grant funded posts and will be encouraged to expand the programme with a balance of methodological and applied research

This post-holder will be exposed to a variety of applications of statistics to real-life problems. There is flexibility on the direction of the research as long as the methods can be applied to the collaborative work. The post-holder will be encouraged to work with other internal statisticians and benefit from being part of this statistical community that shares ideas and solutions to problems.

Each member of the programme is expected to share knowledge with other members of the group either by mentoring and tutoring or by regular scientific updates and discussion groups. The aim is that methods being developed will be applied to the collaborative work and that this requires close team work.

Each member of the BSU is expected to contribute to discussions within the Unit on developments of techniques. Each member will be expected to write scientific papers, and to contribute to the wider scientific community by refereeing papers. The post-holders will contribute to the Unit's strategy for public communication of science, for example, participating in the annual Cambridge Science Week.
