Hi Stephen,
Thanks for your suggestions. Our digital records are mainly photographs and CAD data but many of the same issues still apply. Interesting that the Reproductions tab can be used to link to other types of file. If you wouldn't mind a list of the fields (TAG or name in data dictionary) that you use to describe and locate a digital object would be useful as it may turn out that we have some of them already. There's no rush but if you do have a spare moment at some point..
Best wishes,
Catherine

Subject: Re: Adlib Archive and Digital Records
Hi Catherine,
At the BFI National Archive we recently switched from DVD to MP4 for our access copy model, for the various recording/copying projects we undertake in bulk for TV material. So we changed from using Adlib to describe DVDs (one record for each disc on the shelf) to describing MP4s (one record for each file in the network).
We automate the creation of those MP4 records from within our Workflow system, so it's less arduous in terms of record creation for the users. But we're attached to the one-record-per-MP4 model for various reasons. We link to the MP4 file itself using the Reproductions tab, and offer that through the web interface for playback.
We have built a set of specific Digital Video fields in our object level record structure (we're using the archive Adlib structure but with modifications to bespoke it for a film archive object). We're also creating one-record-per-file for our master digital video files, which we store on LTO tapes, but still describe as a digital file asset rather than a video asset. So for most of the recorded/copied assets, we end up with two digital file records: one master (50I) and one access (MP4), both linked to the parent object (in most cases an obsolete video format).
If it would help, I could check the fields we're using, and let you know - some of them may be standard Adlib fields with different emphasis?
RE ISAD(G): there are some fairly mature standards for cataloguing digital video assets, which you may be able to use in parallel with ISAD(G). Two of the most prominent are PBCore (a US Public Broadcasting network standard) and EBUCore (European equivalent, with emphasis on European formats). Both allow for a hierarchical structure which may enable some interoperability with ISAD(G).
