Totally agree with Jennie - I follow people on Twitter that I've never met but I always check first their feed and if they also follow/are followed by people I know then that's fine. Facebook I only have people I actually know
I use my phone for it and tend to check it at lunchtimes/after work etc...
I like others do mix work and personal but am much more open on Facebook (which I keep locked down)

Hi,
I joined Twitter largely because I was going to Umbrella 2011, and there was
so much publicity of the hashtag and I wanted to follow what was happening.
I'm @mininglibrarian, and now I have a smartphone I find that I use it a lot
more. I'm a solo librarian and it makes me feel more connected to the wider
librarianship world. I do use it to ask work questions, I think I would
find it hard to separate my work and personal friends in many ways.
Facebook I use almost entirely as a personal thing, I do also manage an
institutional page for the Institute as well though. I do use my personal
account to "like" and join a few CILIP related pages and groups but I
wouldn't seek out someone I met purely professionally on Facebook and
"friend" them in the same way I would feel comfortable going and following
them without, perhaps, even meeting them.
