No need to guess:
proxyA | proxyB
is choose one randomly and then the other, i.e for the case of I have two equal squids at my site.
proxyA ; proxyB
is try A then try B. Combinations are also possible, we have
proxy-lb; proxy01|proxy02|proxy03
which is try proxy-lb first and if that fails pick one 01, 02, 03 randomly.
(In fact proxy-lb resolves to 3 ip address of the other but that's academic for this point)
precedence is ';' before '|'.
