Dear Chris,
Yes you are correct in your statement that the Irish legislation varies greatly from the UK. Unfortunately, there not a comprehensive retention document that outlines retention requirements that is applicable to the whole of Ireland. The IRMS Ireland group has lobbied the Irish Government in relation to this issue. We sent them a submission document last June and made several follow up with each of the respective ministers who received it.
We offered IRMS Irelands help as an organisation in relation to updating the National Retention Policy for Local Authority Records, published by the Local Government Management Services Board in 2002. It was their first attempt and it is a good starter document but it is outdated.
There are several documents that you may go to for guidance, depending on your industry sector. I will send you a white paper that I have written on the subject.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Best regards
Dorothy

Subject: RM in the Republic of Ireland
Dear All (with apologies for cross posting)
I'm currently trying to increase my knowledge and understanding of information and records management regulatory requirements specific to the Republic of Ireland, particularly regarding the retention and disposal of records.
What I'm trying to obtain is a list of the legislative / regulatory retention requirements that are specific to the Republic of Ireland. For example, I always presumed that the UK Data Protection Act 1998 was exactly the same piece of legislation applicable in the Republic of Ireland, but have recently discovered (if my understanding is correct) that the ROI have a separate Data Protection Act?
That got me thinking, and am now very curious and interested in finding out i) what other pieces of legislation are specific to the ROI, and ii) of the many other UK legislative/regulatory requirements, which of them are not applicable in the ROI?
So I was wondering, and apologies for the rather random nature of this email, but is this something anyone would have knowledge on?
Many Thanks,
Chris
