ARLIS/UK & Ireland is delighted to be holding its sixteenth annual lecture at the Barber Institute, which is celebrating its 80th birthday in 2012. Our guest lecture is:
Ann Sumner, Director of the Barber
on
Fearnley so far
Director of the Barber Institute, Professor Ann Sumner has worked on the curatorial teams at three university galleries to date, including the Holburne Museum at the University of Bath and the Whitworth Art Gallery at the University of Manchester, in addition to the Barber Institute. She gained her first job at the National Portrait Gallery, London, and has also worked as a curator at Dulwich Picture Gallery, Harewood House in Yorkshire, and the National Museum, Cardiff, where she was Head of Fine Art for eight years until her appointment to the Barber in 2007. Ann's lecture will highlight her research to date on the Norwegian painter Thomas Fearnley 1802 - 1842 whose painting of the village of Ramsau in the Bavarian Alps is in the Barber collection, and who will be the subject of a major exhibition at the Barber later this year. This is the first exhibition of this artist in Britain who, in his day from his English period, was compared favourably with Turner.
