Hi Anne
Oh how I sympathise - I know this feeling well! We too get late graduands, but generally try to slot them in to the correct place in the running order. If not we would add them in to the end of the ceremony and if all else failed (and they would have to be seriously late for this to happen) we probably would accommodate them in another ceremony. W e occasionally get a student who turns up for the wrong ceremony entirely, and we do fit them in at the end of which ever ceremony they have arrived at.
We don't allow late graduands to delay anything - we just plough on regardless and fit them in somewhere and somehow - this is because turn around times on ceremonies is too tight to allow any delay.
Hope this helps

Subject: Late graduates - ceremonies
Dear Colleagues,
We're in the middle of holding our awards ceremonies and had a challenging afternoon yesterday to say the least. We had an unusually large amount of late graduates and guests arriving (no cause - just late) which made the ceremony almost unmanageable for staff to co-ordinate under a great deal of pressure.
At Hertfordshire we endeavour to fit the late arrival in their correct slot, if not at the end of their cohort. Last resort is they are presented at the very end of the whole ceremony. If they are too late for that, we do not allow them to 'carry over' to the next ceremony as they are usually all full.
May I ask what your practice is?
I'd be grateful if you don't mind sharing your practice.
Many thanks,
Anne
