The "Camden New Journal" reports the permission
given to redevelop the vacant Middlesex Hospital
site, and that the developers agree to pay £100K
towards upkeep of the chapel where Kipling laid after he died.
From websites I have copied:
Thanks to being listed, the Italian Gothic chapel
has survived. .... It formed the heart of the
complex, with the later buildings constructed
around it. Today, it looks bereft without that context.
The developers write:"The chapel is retained
for community use and the interesting facades on
Nassau Street are preserved... The architecture
is carefully responsive to the surroundings....
At the heart of the development, a new large
public space forms the setting for the glorious
Grade II listed chapel, a community building set
among trees and surrounded by residences of character and quality.
A further public exhibition on the proposals will
be announced shortly and information will be made
available on the project website at www.themiddlesex.com."
It will be nice to be able to visit it again
