If you're thinking of applying for a Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellowship - or even if you're not - you might be interested in this. Our first two Engagement Fellows - consultant anaesthetist and TV presenter Kevin Fong, and medical historian and author Richard Barnett - have interviewed each other about their paths into public engagement, what motivates them and what their Fellowships are allowing them to do (short answer: more). We've put edited transcripts and audio excerpts from their conversation on the Trust's blog.
There's an introduction to the interviews here: http://wellc.me/zqdat6
For the truth about high-energy astrophysics courses and how to get invited to NASA's astronaut training centre, read Kevin's story: http://wellc.me/z1OKGF
To compare microscopy and Turner paintings, with a slight detour round murder and Hippocrates, Richard's story was published today: http://wellc.me/zKzGkd
If, for any reason, those links don't work, the Trust's blog is here: http://wellcometrust.wordpress.com/

Now in their second year, Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellowships aim to support and develop upcoming stars in public engagement with science. Do you know a rising star who is brilliant, passionate and inspiring? Are you one? If so we are now open for applications, so please pass on or read on.
The Engagement Fellowships champion the leaders of tomorrow by fostering the most promising upcoming talent of today. We are looking for people with a strong track record of engaging the public with ideas around biomedical science and/or medical humanities, looking to make a step-change in their careers.
We will provide the freedom, resources and environment to enable exceptional individuals to develop their skills and practice in encouraging the public to examine, explore and debate the big scientific challenges that society faces.
Engagement Fellowships are open to individuals with a proven track record of delivering (rather than facilitating) high-quality public engagement and aim to propel Fellows to become leaders in the field of public engagement with science in the UK and/or the Republic of Ireland.
Applications are welcome from professional science communicators, research scientists, medical historians, clinicians or professionals working in the arts. Applicants may or may not be currently affiliated to or employed by a UK academic institution. In those cases where they are, however, applicants may be asked to demonstrate how they will help to further embed public engagement as a core activity within their home institution on their return.
