Hi Tracy
I had a similar issue to this a few years ago with a company, similar scenario - competencies changed within the job and many did not have the literacy/cognitive ability necessary to do the new jobs. From an OH perspective difficult to advise as there is no identified health issue, more a performance issue really, so what they did was bring in someone from a local college who specialised in helping people with literacy to do individual assessments, from there some dyslexic issues were eventually identified but has to be said there weren't many and some employees left the company rather than go through this. As with any management change OH role at that time was supporting those who found it difficult and consequently experienced stress related reactions.
The company did all they could and offered generous financial packages to those who wanted to go, acknowledging that moving the goal posts after umpteen years of accepting the capabilities of these employees was very hard for them.
Good luck!
Karen

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] CAPABILITY/LEARNING DIFFICULTY
Good afternoon
One factory I cover is currently undergoing huge changes. Some of the employees have worked at the factory for over 30 years and have only been required to do mundane tasks such as filling up crates and pushing them to other areas. Now all staff will need to rotate and be able to undertake all tasks. One to ones have commenced with HR and managment and it has been noted that some staff are not capable of even writing their names and cannot read. It is not clear if this is due to intelligance or dyslexia as they have never been tested. Can anyone advise me how in my capacity of OH I can help. This is a particularly difficult site just a few months ago I came accross a gentleman at screening who was deaf and could not speak. He had been employed at the site for 30 years. I got Acess to work involved and now he can have a signer 3hrs per week and he has said it has made such a difference as he can now communicate properly! Any comment gratefully appreciated as always.
