Applications are invited for a research assistant position, funded by The Leverhulme Trust, at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (SIPBS),
a world-class research and training centre for drug discovery and development in the heart of Glasgow.
The successful applicant will work on a project entitled 'Bioactive chemicals from African bee glue'. Bee glue is a resinous substance produced to protect the hive from
external contaminants. It is a popular natural remedy used for a variety of ailments. The project seeks to investigate bee glue samples using modern scientific techniques
to discover new natural antimicrobial natural products.
Applicants should have a good honours degree in chemistry, pharmacy or a related discipline with knowledge in chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques applied to
the purification and structure elucidation of natural products. A PhD or previous research experience in natural products chemistry (or a related discipline) is desirable.
The successful applicant will be expected to plan and organise his/her own workload effectively and to work within a team. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
with the ability to listen and to present complex information, are essential.
Appointments will be made on the Research Staff grade 6 scale (£25,101 p.a). The position is for a fixed term of 24 months with a start date on August 1st 2012.
