British Sociological Association
London Medical Sociology Group Meeting
Wednesday 8th Feb. - 6pm
THE NUFFIELD COUNCIL ON BIOETHICS REPORT 'HUMAN BODIES' AND THE ROLE OF MEDICAL SOCIOLOGY
Prof. Naomi Pfeffer
University College London
Chaired by Marilyn Strathern, the Nuffield Council of Bioethics Working Party on Human Bodies in Medicine and Research benefitted from social science scholarship as well as that of lawyers and ethicists. Its starting point is people, as both 'source' and recipient (the previous Nuffield Report was concerned only with 'human tissue'). Ambitious in scope, the Report considers whole bodies, dead and alive, body parts - mundane and iconic - and therapeutic and research applications. Equal emphasis is placed on roles and responsibilities of professionals and organizations - public, commercial and civil society - as those of individuals: source and recipient. The methodology is comparative and some intriguing similarities and inconsistencies are revealed - for instance, why are incentives countenanced in some contexts but not others - which suggest new opportunities for social scientific investigation.
Naomi Pfeffer is a medical historian and sociologist who writes about collections of 'stuff' at the beginning and end of life, specifically fetuses and cadavers. She is completing 'Insider Trading', in which she compares the development of cadaver tissue 'banks' in the UK and USA.
