Hi Shanon
We are working on a map display of a selection of our collection items - www.blackcountryhistory.org/map - mainly old photos where pinning them on a map adds to the user experience, users can use their mobile phone to see old photos of places near them.
We store the geo location data as Eastings Northings in our collections management system, upload the data to the website and hey presto it appears on the map due to some nifty coding by our web developers (Orangeleaf Systems).

Subject: Geographical Information System use in Museums
Dear All,
At Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, I’ve embarked upon a 4-month secondment, to carry out a review of location-based information across the organisation. I will be assessing the quality of the georeferences and supporting metadata as a first step for uploading into our Geographical Information System.
We have been using Esri GIS software for c10 years in one curatorial department to get collections online via a data Partnership and are now looking into methods of extending this to all departments. We have a CMS that holds collections information, but is proprietary and doesn’t link with any other software product to present information online utilising backdrop maps.
Is anyone currently using GIS in a similar manner or for any of the following: getting collections online, as a research tool, or in-house as a public kiosk to access collections?
I would be grateful to hear from anyone either on or off List that could offer any advice on their experiences with using GIS.
Thank you for any help you can offer,
Shanon
