Dear all,
A PhD position is open at Luleå Univeristy in Sweden for anyone interested in working with ore genesis in the Falun area in Bergslagen, Sweden. Bergslagen is one of the classical mining areas in Europe and the Falun deposits was in operation for over 800 years until it closed in the mid 1990ies.

PhD student in ore geology
Luleå University of Technology is looking for a PhD student in ore geology. The PhD student will work with ore genetic and structural studies in the Falun area in Bergslagen, Sweden, in Palaeoproterozoic rocks. The Falun area can be regarded as the Swedish cradle with respect to ore deposits and mining, since the Falu mine was in continuous operation for 800 years before it closed approximately 20 years ago. In spite of this long period of mining, the area is still attractive for exploration and very little modern ore genetic studies have been completed in the area. In the project, which is a co-operation with the Geological Survey of Sweden, the following topics will be the main focus:
I. Regional structural relationships and structural control of the ore horizons.
II. Proximal and distal alteration.
III. Paragenetic studies of mineralization types – geometallurgy.
IV. 3D-modelling of the Falun deposit using drill core and mine map information.
V. Regional relationships – comparative studies with, for example, Svärdsjö.
People with a bachelor or masters degree in geosciences with a specialization in mineralogy, petrology and structural geology are qualified to apply. Merits are given to applicants with a documented knowledge of economic geology. The project requires that the PhD student spends longer periods in the Falun area and, since the project is field-based, the applicant must have a driving license. The cooperation with the Geological Survey of Sweden also means that some time may be spent at their headquarters in Uppsala.
