Indexing is indeed tedious, but a thorough and well-crafted index is a thing
of beauty and a joy to its users, as well as a compliment to the author, who
is the individual best qualified to do it. There are some good tips and
ideas in the Profhacker item Bruce referenced. I found Excel to be the most
useful standard office program for the task.

The short answer is no.
It's a pretty tedious process of reading through the entire manuscript, and
building up the index. This seems to cover it:

Obviously how painful it is depends on how many words the book is. My
experience wasn't so bad.
