I've been using the Econo system for about 20 years for prep scale purifications. I regularly do gradients using an external gradient maker (something like with Hoefer sells - http://www.hoeferinc.com/product.asp?ProdID=171) that feeds into the pump. It's worked reliably for me and allows the use of cheap columns to boot.
Good luck,
Arthur
