The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape and Culture Lab are
seeking to appoint a Research Associate to work on the PATINA
(Personal Architectonics Through INteractions with Artefacts) project.
The successful candidate will work in the Digital Interaction Group in
Culture Lab, a renowned interdisciplinary research centre.
PATINA is a £1.7m project jointly funded by AHRC and EPSRC through the
Digital Economy Programme on 'Designing Effective Research Spaces'.
PATINA will provide researchers with new opportunities to create
research spaces that emphasise the primacy of research material, and
support the sharing of research activities as well as results. Through
recording of research practice the project will also enable you to
'walk in the footsteps' of other researchers, and explore how the
provenance of your developing ideas links with theirs through shared
objects that exist both online and in the real world.
Candidates must hold a PhD and have exceptional creative skills as
well as an ability to manage and coordinate activities across a wide
range of different work packages with both academic and commercial
partners from sectors as diverse as archaeology, media, interaction
design and computer hardware and software development. Good
interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently are
required. We are particularly seeking early career researchers with
experience in visual design, communication and information
visualisation and the ability to handle and visualising data using
tools such as processing. You will act as 'project cartographer'
finding novel way of providing insight into the collaboration within
the project and working with the technology groups on graphical user
interfaces.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1. To design and develop new interfaces, devices and spaces for
researchers to interact with physical and virtual research objects.
2. Help develop the theoretical basis for the PATINA technologies
through literature review and analysis.
3. Co-ordinate and integrate results of Interaction Design based work packages.
4. Help to develop and deploy technology sketches and prototypes.
5. Co-ordinate 'living labs' to test and validate technology interventions
6. Write up research results for potential publications.
