With apologies for cross posting, please can we ask for this ‘call for participants’ to be circulated among German and Film Studies postgraduates.

Dear all,

The landscape of German Screen Studies in the UK is set to change considerably over the next twelve months. With the growing integration of Film Studies and German studies in the UK, and a proposed DAAD funded German Screen Studies Network based at King’s College London under the direction of Professor Erica Carter and Dr Martin Brady, the process is well advanced of building the field and providing opportunities, such as a planned 2012 international symposium on nonfiction German film, to raise the profile of interdisciplinary German Screen Studies nationwide.

Both the AHRC and the Higher Education Funding Council have recognized a marked shift in the Modern Languages towards interdisciplinary contemporary cultural studies, in particular Film and Television Studies, for which doctoral funding applications are increasing. In recognition of this, and as an offshoot of the German Screen Studies Network, funds from the KCL German Department Initiative Fund have been made available for a parallel network to be launched for postgraduate students engaged in research into German cinema, television and other contemporary screen-based media. This network aims to provide a platform for postgraduates who wish to discuss and present their research, share and evaluate sources, and screen moving images. In order to get the network off the ground there will be a preliminary meeting on March 2nd at King's College London from 17.00pm, during which these initial objectives will be discussed and developed. This session will also offer an opportunity for participants to introduce their individual research projects and respond to questions. This will be followed by a workshop later in the term to officially launch the network.

This call for participants therefore asks for any postgraduate students whose research is related in any way to German Screen Studies and who wish to be involved with this initiative to contact us so that the next steps can be taken in organizing the first meeting. The KCL German department have confirmed that travel costs to London for up to four students has been made available from the fund, so if you wish to apply for one of these, please ask.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Thomas Haynes (University College London, German - [log in to unmask])
André Hammelmann (King’s College London, German - [log in to unmask])
