World Cinema and the Decorative Image
Wednesday 29 February, 5pm, GB117, Gaskell Building
Film culture repeatedly scorns the decorative image, preferring austere and masculine beauty to the feminised pretty. There is a geopolitics to this aesthetics, with the East often signifying decadent decoration for a Western film theory that worked to define the parameters of cinematicity. But cinema does not always heed this aesthetic hierarchy. This talk will consider the decorative image in world cinema, and the worldliness of the decorative image.
Rosalind Galt is senior lecturer in film studies at the University of Sussex. She is the author of Pretty: Film and the Decorative Image (Columbia, 2011) and The New European Cinema: Redrawing the Map (Columbia, 2006) and co-editor of Global Art Cinema: New Theories and Histories (OUP, 2010).
