Dear Colleagues,
The University of Nottingham was successful in winning one of the
Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Centres
(DTC) last year. Of the 19 annual awards, the Nottingham ESRC DTC has a
“steer” for two of the 19 awards to be made for language-based social
science research in Area Studies, one in Chinese Studies and the other
in Russian and Eastern European Studies. We welcome applications from
qualified applicants able to use these languages in any field of the
social sciences available at Nottingham provided there is supervisory
capacity and a fit between the proposal and the research agenda of the
respective schools.
There are three types of awards. A standard +3 PhD award for an
applicant who has a masters with the required research training that is
recognised by the ESRC and a research competent command of one of the
Area Study languages, a 1+3 award that involves a research training
masters and language training followed by a PhD, and a 2+3 award that
involves one year of intensive language training, a masters and more
language training, and a PhD award.
Could you please pass on this information to potential candidates or to
colleagues who might be aware of potential candidates. Time is now
pressing. The University’s deadline for the submission of an ESRC
application is *15 March*, BUT BEFORE the applicant can apply she or he
must have an offer from the University to study for a PhD. In practice,
an applicant needs a school or department at Nottingham to agree to make
them an offer by the start of March to have the paper work in order.
