Founded in 2011, The China Britain Youth Association (CBYA) is a new not-for-profit society dedicated to the furthering of understanding between young people in Britain and China.
CBYA Oxford is now very pleased to invite you to a rare lecture by Deng Fei. An investigative reporter and leading microblogger, Deng Fei won plaudits and nearly 1.7 million Chinese Weibo followers with a string of more than 100 investigative articles on sensitive topics such as child trafficking, illegal demolition of homes, organ harvesting from death-penalty victims, and shoddy school construction. In February last year, Mr Deng used Weibo to help reunite parents with their abducted child, successfully concluding a 3-year nationwide search.
"Journalists can do more than just write articles. They can take action," Deng says. "I reported on the secret dark side of China, so I know what the problems are. As a journalist and as a citizen, I have a responsibility to try to solve those problems."
Deng Fei is also an advocate for charity and social entrepreneurship; in 2011 he began the Free Lunch for Children Foundation, a program which provided meals for over 10,000 children who live in China's underprivileged countryside. Mr Deng will be joining us to discuss his journalist career and the emerging charity sector in China.
Monday¡¯s event will feature Mr Deng¡¯s keynote address, followed by a Q&A session from the audience.
