1. Announcement of the joint AVA/BMVA meeting in Cambridge - May 22.

2nd Joint AVA / BMVA Meeting on Biological and Machine Vision.
(Incorporating the AVA Annual General Meeting)

22nd May 2012
Microsoft Research, Cambridge, UK

Plenary speaker
Aude Oliva, MIT

Abstract submission and registration are now open for this meeting. The study of biological and machine vision share much common history (eg Marr), and each discipline has benefited enormously from findings and techniques from the other. The aim of this meeting, organised jointly by the AVA (UK biological vision) and BMVA (UK computer vision) is to reignite conversations between these two fields.

We particularly encourage submissions that will be of potential cross-disciplinary interest to both biological and machine vision. Apart from a small number of invited speakers presentation will be in the form of posters so as to foster greater discussion.

Abstracts for should be no more than 250 words long. Two submission options are available depending on whether or not you wish the abstract to be published in the journal Perception. Abstracts submitted under the “Poster Perception” option should present original research. Abstracts presenting interesting cross-over, but not original work should be submitted under the “Poster not Perception” option. Authors may select this option if they prefer. Regardless of publication mode abstracts should be in a format suitable for Perception with inline citations giving authors, year, publication, volume, and page numbers or paper number. See http://www.perceptionweb.com/ecvp/ecvp11.pdf for examples.

Abstract submission closes: 30th March 2012

As usual for meeting information and abstract submission go to:

2. Information about online voting for the AVA committee election

The AVA committee has a maximum of 10 members, including 4 unopposed positions (Chair, Vice-chair, Secretary, Treasurer). This year there are 9 candidates for the 6 elected positions, and so as last year online voting will be conducted through a website called BallotBin.com. A separate email inviting AVA members to vote in the election, and describing how to do it, will be sent before the end of February. The voting will be open for 2 weeks after that, to maximize your opportunity to vote.

3. Updated EPSRC portfolio and priorities in relation to "Vision, hearing and other senses"

The EPSRC have announced their decisions regarding future funding and have indicated that they plan to "maintain our key capability and proportional funding level in this area". This is good news for AVA members. You can read the full details following this link:
