New MSc Course
The UCL Department of Statistical Science now offers an MSc pathway in Medical Statistics.

Medical Statistics is a fundamental scientific component of health research. As new and more complex biomedical problems emerge, medical statistics faces a challenge in terms of both the novel application of existing methods and the development of new superior methods. Medical statisticians enable the application of the best possible quantitative methods in health research and assist in the reliable translation of research findings to public and patients' health care.

London provides an excellent environment in which to study statistical science, being home to the Royal Statistical Society as well as the base for a large community of statisticans, both academic and non-academic.
As a student you will benefit from careers talks delivered by professionals working in the pharmaceutical industry.
There are also opportunities for students to interact with medical researchers working in the UCL Biomedical Research Centre and the UCL Clinical Trials Units.
The MSc is accredited by the Royal Statistical Society. As a graduate of the programme, you will automatically be granted the Graduate Statistician status on application to the society.
Programme structure:
The Statistics (Medical Statistics) MSc provides students with a sound background in theoretical statistics as well as practical hands on experience in designing, analysing and interpreting health studies.

Modules:
Students take eight modules, plus a further module from a choice of two. In addition, students undertake an individual research project, culminating in a 10,000-12,000 word dissertation.

Foundation course (not assessed)
Statistical inference
Statistical models and data analysis
Statistical design of investigations
Medical statistics I
Medical statistics II
Statistical computing
Applied Bayesian methods
Individual research project.

Optional modules:
Students choose one of the following two modules:
Genetic statistics
Stochastic systems.

Programme information:
The programme is taken full-time over one year, or part-time over two years.

Entry requirements:
A minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor's degree in a quantitative discipline from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Knowledge of mathematical methods and linear algebra at university level and familiarity with introductory probability and statistics is required. Relevant professional experience will also be taken into consideration.
