It really depends on the specific RFID tags and readers that you are using. Smaller/cheaper tags have a range of a few inches or cm (think oyster cards) but big heavy duty tags can be read from 100m under the right conditions.
I'd expect to see RFID appearing more and more now that the tag prices are down in the 1/2p range per tag especially since there is no reason you can't phase them in alongside the existing systems.
The main reason that they haven't been used is that it was only a few of years ago that even the cheap tags could cost 10/15p a piece. So while RFID has been used a lot on pallets and containers it's only recently that the tag cost makes it worth considering tagging individual items
