Hi
Please see below for details of a touring exhibition about enamel advertising signs, which is currently at the Royal Cornwall Museum and is available to hire from April 2012 onwards...
So Near & Yet So Far, a touring exhibition of enamel advertising signs is available for hire from Andrew Morley, world authority on enamel advertising and author of the Street Jewellery series of books on the subject.
So Near & Yet So Far comprises a wide range of styles, shapes and sizes of these historically important signs, which advertise a wide range of products ranging from metal polish to motor insurance. The title of the exhibition is borrowed from the slogan on a Fry's chocolate sign of c.1900, designed by Tom Browne. There are over 100 exhibits including many obscure and amusing Victorian /Edwardian products such as Florador 'the perfect food' and Burnard & Algers manures, plus many well-known brand names such as Guinness, Spratt, Ogden, WH Smith, Cerebos, Lever, Whitbread, Cadbury and many more. The exhibition has appeal not only to the general public, but also as an educational experience and as a revelation about the 19th to early 20th century origin of modern commercial and manufacturing marketing techniques. The exhibition evokes many responses including nostalgia for once familiar treats such as Fry's Five Boys chocolate and wonder at the ingenuity of early graphic designers and advertising copy-writers.
The exhibition is available from April 2012 until the end of 2016, on a monthly hire basis.
The exhibition is currently on show at the Royal Cornwall Museum Truro.
