We block YouTube for student access but not for staff. The main reason for that was that when I looked at about 100 student accesses only a couple were anything that could be remotely called educational. Students can get at YouTube on their own devices anyway. We allow full access to iPlayer, TrueTube etc. My only worry would be if we started hitting the limit of our JANET/VirginMedia connections but so far we tend to idle along with 20%-30% maximum.
We have also added a Planet E-Stream server to allow staff to record from the various TV stations and up-load video materials (via an IT Support Officer to check copyright) and have quite a library of video materials on that.

Subject: [VLES] Streaming Media such as You Tube
Hi
a quick question on how are people managing streaming media either within your VLE or not within it.
When You Tube first got a mention it was usually because colleges had blocked it. Last time I was talking to people it seemed to be half and half in terms of half blocked it and half didn't.
I'm just wondering where we are now with that kind of media. You tube, BBC iplayer anything that streams really. If these things are allowed are you using anything in particular to manage it or just letting it in.
Thanks
Heather
