Dear VAR-L and Rudy,
Yes, Phon could, in the future, play a major role in sociophonetic analyses. In particular, once the interface between Phon and Praat is fully constructed, the two will make a winning combination.
With support from NICHD, the program has been developed by Yvan Rose and Greg Hedlund at Memorial University Newfoundland and I have worked with Yvan and Greg to interface properly with the CLAN programs and to develop the PhonBank database that uses Phon and CLAN.
The program, data, and other information can be freely downloaded from links given at
http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/phon/
Currently, the major target topic has been phonological development, but Yvan and I would love to encourage the use of the program for sociolinguistics, as well as the archiving of resultant data sets in TalkBank.
