Seminar
Developments in PRT
Prof Martin Lowson
Date: 16.00 Wednesday 1 February 2012
Venue: UCL Chadwick LT B05
Abstract
Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) has been proposed as a new mode of transport for cities in the 21st century. The first practical applications of PRT are now in operation at Heathrow Airport and Masdar city Abu Dhabi. There is worldwide interest and new applications are committed for Suncheon, South Korea and Amritsar, India.
The seminar will examine the rationale for PRT, its history and recent developments, concentrating on the ULTra system. Performance and passenger response to ULTra at Heathrow Terminal 5 will be reviewed. New opportunities for transport in cities offered by PRT will be discussed, especially its ability to provide a network link to existing modes of transport. Possible issues such as the scalability of PRT in an urban context and the integration of infrastructure into the urban fabric will also be reviewed.
