US EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT ALCOHOL INTERVENTION DISAPPOINTS IN FIRST EUROPEAN TRIAL
The first European trial of an emergency department brief alcohol intervention being implemented
nationally in the USA found no significant impacts either short term or a year later, and in the
major US trial there were short-term impacts only. Generally this site for brief interventions has
patchy evidence of effectiveness, though in Britain different types of interventions have worked.

ANTI-OVERDOSE MEDIA CAMPAIGN TARGETS INJECTORS IN AUSTRALIA
Faced with rapidly increasing heroin overdose deaths, the Australian state of Victoria mounted a
media campaign targeted at drug users via treatment and needle exchange services. The results
illuminate the limitations of such campaigns as much as their plus points.

LONG-TERM BENEFITS OF LEGAL HEROIN FOR HEROIN ADDICTS IN SPAIN
Further and long-term evidence from a trial in Granada in Spain that prescribing heroin to heroin
addicts who have not done well on methadone benefits them and the wider society, including in this
case somewhat more working and off welfare benefits than after being prescribed methadone.

DO MEN AND WOMEN NEED DIFFERENT SORTS OF EMPLOYMENT HELP?
In New York intensive case management coordinating multiple sources of support helped resolve the
substance use problems of welfare applicants, but only among the women - who faced the greatest
barriers to working - did this promote employment. Perhaps men would have done better being helped
to rapidly enter the job market.

Great presentation at a national conference by our colleague Paul Conlon. The presentation describes the introduction of CRA (Community Reinforcement Approach) to Coolmine TC:

Please remember to send your public acclaim/celebration events to the list. We need to be much more active in celebrating our successes - even if that's only about raising our profile.
