Hi Eduardo,
probably a bit late, but, the simplest way to get a mask of the detected
objects is to get the "Segmented into object patches" image from the check
image output of SExtractor. You can then threshold this to get a simple
mask and use KAPPA:COPYBAD to mask other images.
Having said that, the advantages of creating an ARD catalogue are that you
can also scale the detection ellipses to exclude more of the flux (I have
an application that nearly does this, it scales the ellipses and creates a
mask image not an ARD file, also just works on FITS).
