Sergei Prokofiev: Man of the People?
The London Philharmonic Orchestra has collaborated with the Centre for Russian Music at Goldsmiths, University of London, to host the Prokofiev Festival, 13 January - 1 February 2012, at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London.
Professor Alexander Ivashkin, Director of Classical Performance and Head of the Centre for Russian Music at Goldsmiths, will lead a free pre-concert discussion and performance of Prokofiev's works for the cello, open to the general public from 6.00pm on Friday 13 January.
The repertoire includes Prokofiev's unfinished solo Cello Sonata Op.133 - the composer's final work - and his grandson Gabriel Prokofiev's Outta Pulser/Jerk Driver for nine cellos, to be performed for the first time by TrinityGold Cello Ensemble directed by Natalia Pavlutskaya and presented by the composer.
"Goldsmiths hosts the only archive in the world wholly dedicated to Sergei Prokofiev and I have studied, performed and recorded his work for many years," said Professor Ivashkin. "It is an honour to work with one of the UK's most exciting orchestras and I look forward to bringing Prokofiev's music to life at the Royal Festival Hall."
Alexander Ivashkin, cello/speaker/conductor, is joined by Goldsmiths postgraduate students Coady Green, piano, Rebecca Turner and Valerie Welbanks, cellos and TrinityGold Cello Ensemble directed by Natalia Pavlutskaya.
