That's in my default environment when I log in. I even added the path
explicitly in the makefile just to be sure. It's still a no-go.

Well removing it did break my system, so it's back now :). But by
removing it, I only had one version of the libs available when I tried
to complile the module, and it still failed with the same message.

Yes, and I even checked the libs with objdump, and it was there. So I'm
a bit confused why it fails with that message. It did say something
about "hidden symbols", but my linking-fu is not strong enough to
determine if this affects the issue.
