Dear all,
Apologies for cross posting;
The Centre for the History of the Emotions at QMUL invites you to a
public lecture and wine reception on 19th January 2012:
'The Devil Made Me Do It'
Professor Esther Cohen
Department of History, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
This lecture will seek a connection between two totally different
phenomena that flourished during the twelfth century: on the one hand,
a monastic outpouring of literature about devils active in monasteries
(not necessarily cases of possession, but more of temptation) and,
during the same period, the spread of the idea of free will and
autonomous responsibility in all fields of intellectual activity from
marriage theology to criminal law. The lecture will attempt to examine
the emotions raised by those two phenomena and the interrelationship
between the expectations raised by learned discourse and the emotional
reactions to it.
Thursday 19th January, 6-8 pm.
The lecture and discussion will be followed by a wine reception.
Venue: Lecture Theatre 2.40 - Francis Bancroft Building, Queen Mary,
Mile End Campus
