medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear George,
Unfortunately, with regard to many of the readings about saints, the question usually has to be "WHICH Sarum breviary"? The Sarum readings from the Bible and homiliary seem to have been largely standardized from an early date, but the readings based on saints' legends (which usually comprise at least lessons 1-6, and sometimes all 9) could vary quite a lot from manuscript to manuscript. Procter and Wordsworth published one fairly common version (which was chosen for the printed folio editions of the 16th century), but it is by no means a definitive edition. The early printed quarto editions have a different version of the readings for most saints, which is closely related to another batch of manuscripts, and the majority of the surviving manuscripts don't match either one. (I've published some articles on this and could send you the references if you're interested).
If the folio you're working on doesn't turn out to match the readings in Procter and Wordsworth, I'd be really interested in seeing your transcription. I have a lot of the manuscripts on microfilm now (as well as the printed quarto editions) and would enjoy trying to find out whether your fragment is closely related to any of them.
(Life is short, research is long . . .)

I have not checked against the Roman breviary; to be honest, I didn't think that would even be a starter, but you know about this way more than do I, so I shall check the Latin of the Sarum against the Roman first, and if they are fairly similar I can then peek at an English translation of the Roman Breviary.
