Dear all,
reminder from RAS about PhD thesis prizes (deadline is end of this month).
Supervisors in UK universities who are geophysicists and members of the BGA
through the GeolSoc rather than the RAS can also submit their students.

Dear Colleagues,
Can I urge you to nominate candidates for the RAS Penston and Runcorn prizes?
The deadline for nominations is 31 January 2012.
The 2 prizes, each of £1,000, will be awarded for the best doctoral thesis
submitted to a UK university in 2011 in respectively Astronomy or Astrophysics
(Penston) and Geophysics, including Exploration Geophysics; Physics of the
Earth's Atmosphere, Ionosphere or Magnetosphere; Planetary Physics; Solar
Physics or Solid-Earth Geophysics (Runcorn).
In addition to the cash prizes (which includes £50 for runners up) the winners
will be given the opportunity of making a presentation about their thesis to an
Ordinary Meeting of the Society.
Nominations, by email attachment to Lara Maisey ([log in to unmask]), Events and
Awards Officer here at the RAS, should:
* be submitted by a Fellow of the Society (normally the student's
examiner or supervisor)
* be in the form of a citation of not more than 500 words
* be accompanied by a copy of the thesis abstract
* contain the names of two referees familiar with the thesis, at least
one of whom should be affiliated to an academic or research establishment
other than that of the candidate. Suitable referees would be the candidate's
internal and external examiners for the doctorate.
Please take this opportunity of assisting a promising student onto their next
career rung since possession of this prize has been a significant boost for
most previous winners.
With best wishes for 2012
