Engineering Group Field Meeting: French Channel Coast 29th June – 1st July 2012
The 2012 Engineering Group Field Meeting will be led by Prof. Rory Mortimore and will be carried out on the French coastal cliffs at Dieppe and to the west (day 1) and then at Antifer, Le Tilleul and Etretat (day 2) and north of Dieppe at St Martin Plage, Criel and Le Tréport (day 3).
The French Channel coast sections offer a unique chance to investigate stratigraphy, sedimentology, structure, karst development weathering, including Sarsen formation, in relation to engineering geology and hydrogeology. The field localities identified in the provisional itinerary below may well change to include not before seen sections illustrating special aspects of the Chalk.
ITINERARY
Friday 29th June 2012:
Morning Ferry Newhaven to Dieppe (4 hrs) overnight at the Hotel Aguado (or other) Dieppe
Field sections on the cliffs at Dieppe West Cliff and further west at
Evening meal and overnight at Hotel Aguado (or other) Dieppe
Saturday 30th June 2012
Straight to Cap Fagnet and Petroleum Port d’Antifer (about 1.5 hrs drive but with stop at Cany-Barville to buy packed lunch and loo stop).
Then Le Tilleul for the Etretat and Yport sections all day - return to Dieppe and if time stop en route on other cliff sections between Veules-les-roses and Sotteville
Overnight at Hotel Aguado (or other) Dieppe
Sunday 1st July 2012
Local sections adjacent to and to the north of Dieppe at Puys, St Martin Plage, Criel Plage, Mesnil-Val, Le Tréport and Mers - les – Bains (lunch stop at Criel Plage)
Return ferry Dieppe Newhaven
In order to set in place the logistics and hotel bookings for the trip please would you let me know as soon as possible if you are hoping to attend the trip. If you are a company coordinator please would you also let me know the likely numbers from you organisation. The intention is to convene in Newhaven and to travel by minibus (and ferry!) to France.
