Dear All

The Mineralogical Society is delighted to see this kind of discussion engendered by one of our Landmark Series books. I cannot commit the Mineralogical Society to any future publication without discussion at Council. However, were the ongoing discussion to lead to a proposal for a second Landmark volume on Metamorphic papers then I am sure that it would be seriously considered by the Publications Manager and then by Council.

For those of you who are not aware of it I append below the contents page of Bernard Evans' Landmark Series volume. You will also find some comments made by Bruce Yardley in his foreward to the volume. I also attach the Introduction to the volume written by Bernard Evans.

The set of papers selected by Bernard Evans for the Metamorphic Petrology
volume in the MinSoc Landmark Series is:

1: The laws of metamorphism

In his Foreword to the volume, Bruce Yardley noted: "The papers reproduced
here are drawn from a motley collection of sources, based only on the influence that they had on the subject; a number are from publications that would not figure in the Science Citation Index. What makes this collection especially valuable is the commentary that
Bernard Evans has written to go with each chapter, placing it in the context of what had gone before and what happened next. It will be something of a surprise to many readers to learn that the work of figures such as Barrow and Eskola was not always well appreciated at the time, running contrary as it did to the outdated ideas of senior professors whose names are now largely forgotten. In the commentaries he has also been
able to highlight other influential contributions by authors whose work may never have been encapsulated in a single paper suitable for inclusion, but was nonetheless of seminal importance for the development of the field."
Prof. Evans and others who have taken up the challenge of the Landmark Series are all faced with the problem of distilling the many landmark papers into a choice of 15-20. One of the roles played by the series is to contribute to the debate going on right now.
Please note that books in the Landmark series, including that by Bernard Evans, are available from the Mineralogical Society online bookshop (www.minersoc.org) and from the Mineralogical Society of America (http://www.minsocam.org/).

Subject: Seminal Works in Metamorphic Petrology

MINSOC published in 2007 " Landmark Papers - Metamorphic Petrology" by Bernard Evans. Because of space limitations I am sure that other works were omitted. In putting together a seminar on seminal works in metamorphic petrology I have found some interesting "older" works. Out of curiosity, in addition to Bernard's selections, do members of this group have other papers that they would include under the topic "Seminal Works in Metamorphic Petrology"?

Thanks in advance,
Walt Trzcienski
