Oh dear Richard, this is a letter in response to the previous letter on
Celtic derived place-names which I suggested we should respond to. There has
been a spate of articles in the Archaeology popular press recently on the
celtic origins of things assumed Roman (pre-roman roads, pre-roman oppida
sites) so now would be a great time to publish a response from the onomastic
perspective. I suspect there are many more John Chapmans out there in local
history societies that could be reminded that place-name research is a
discipline in its own right actively participating in forming current
thinking on this debate and not simply a confirmation of outdated historical
assumptions or flights of fancy (and yes some of the early volumes do need
updating).
What about trying to get an article published not simply a letter?
I personally suggest that the EPNS author such a response
