The conference “The Caucasus and Central Asia, twenty years after independences: Questioning the notion of “South countries” took place from August 25 to August 27, 2011 in Almaty, and gathered specialists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, France, Georgia, Germany, Japan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan, the United States and Uzbekistan. They addressed such issues as migrations, the role of International organisations, identity and space, poverty, gender issues, etc. Discussions focused on the different dimensions of the notion of “South” (economic, social, political), and questioned its relevance in social science.
Participants explored to what extent this notion can help to understand political, economic, demographic or social developments the new States that emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the Caucasus and in Central Asia.
