Dear Friends:
The January 2012 Newsletter - Newsletter #125 is downloaded here<http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Newsletters/Newsletter.125.Jan.2012.pdf>.
The petition campaign against euthanasia and assisted suicide in Canada was succesful. We received more than 32,000 names that will be sent to the Attorney General of Canada (AG). The online petition can still be signed online<http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/signonline.htm>.
The Carter case <http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2012/01/euthanasia-and-assisted-suicide.html> , which is attempting to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide in Canada was heard by Justice Smith in Vancouver. EPC intervened in the Carter case<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/10/euthanasia-prevention-coalition-granted.html>. EPC made our intervention on December 14. We are waiting for the decision.
We have only raised $25,000 of the $53,000 cost in the Carter case. Thank you to everyone who have generously donated. Please consider donating towards the cost of intervening in the Carter case<http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Donations.htm>.
Preliminary hearings in the Leblanc case<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2012/01/euthanasia-and-assisted-suicide.html>, which is attempting to strike down the assisted suicide law in Canada, will begin on January 27, 2012. EPC is seeking to intervene in the case with Vivre dans la Dignité. The cost to intervene in a court case is prohibitive. EPC<http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Donations.htm> needs you financial support to make this possible<http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Donations.htm>.
Since we are seeking to intervene in the Leblanc case in Quebec, if you have not asked people to sign the petition to the AG<http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/petition.htm> or signed the online petition<http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/signonline.htm>, you can still do so and we will add it to the current petitions.
We are asking you to send hand-written letters to the (AG) and your Member of Parliament. Link to the strategy<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2012/01/assisted-suicide-case-in-british.html>.
The Supreme Court of Canada has decided to hear the Rasouli case<http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health/end-of-life/supreme-court-to-hear-rasouli-end-of-life-case/article2281641/?utm_medium=Feeds%3A%20RSS%2FAtom&utm_source=Life&utm_content=2281641>. The Rasouli<http://www.alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/05/rasouli-case-who-has-right-to-decide-to.html> case<http://www.alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/05/rasouli-case-who-has-right-to-decide-to.html> is seeking to give doctors the right to unilaterally withdraw life-sustainting treatment from patients without consent. EPC<http://www.alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/06/victory-for-individual-rights-doctors.html> successfully intervened in the Rasouli case<http://www.alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/06/victory-for-individual-rights-doctors.html> at the Ontario Court of Appeal who unanimously decided that doctors are required to obtain consent before withdrawing life-sustaining treatment. We have been informed that the Supreme Court of Canada will hear the Rasouli case in May 2012.
The Netherlands lower house is debating approving euthanasia for any and no reason<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2012/01/euthanasia-for-any-and-no-reason-in.html> based on a person who is "tired of living." At the same time Wesley Smith reported that Dutch Psychiatrists are now officially euthanizing patients<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2012/01/dutch-psychiatrists-euthanizing.html>. We need to stop euthanasia and/or assisted suicide from becoming legal.
A case of medical discrimination has erupted against a young girl with a significant disability. Amelia, has been denied a Kidney Transplant due to the fact that she has a significant disability. Read the story<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2012/01/kidney-transplant-denied-to-girl-with.html>.
The Attorney General in Hawaii has confirmed that Assisted Suicide is not legal in Hawaii.
A conference on Assisted Suicide is planned in Great Falls Montana on January 28, 2012<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2012/01/montana-assisted-suicide-seminar.html>. The seminar features Dr. Charles Bentz (Oregon), Montana Senators Greg Hinkle and Jim Shockley and Bradley Williams and Margaret Dore.
EPC is distributing the report of the Parliamentary Committee on Palliative and Compassionate Care<http://pcpcc-cpspsc.com/report> and the book Keep Breathing<http://loveundefiled.blogspot.com/2011/10/book-review-keep-breathing-by-adam.html>. If you want to receive one of these items please indicate it with your donation.
EPC is selling the DVD sets of the Third International Symposium on Euthanasia and <http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/06/third-international-symposium-on.html> Assisted Suicide<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/06/third-international-symposium-on.html> for $50 for one or $80 for two sets. You must indicate that you are purchasing the Symposium DVD's when you send money.
EPC is intervening in these court cases in order to protect you from euthanasia and assisted suicide. EPC intervened in two cases in 2011 and we will make in at least three court interventions in 2012. We require your support for us to be successful. Link to donate or become a member<http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Donations.htm>.
A good way to help EPC pay for these court interventions without costing you anything is by contacting Real Estate for Life<http://www.realestateforlife.org/EPCC/> when you are deciding to sell your home. The service is free and EPC will receive money from the sale of your home.
