Dear All,
I am planning to set up a Charcoal/Wood Work Group, which would run along the same lines as the Archaeobotany Work Group (http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/professional/research/heritage-science/environmental-studies/archaeobotanical-work-group/), but with specific charcoal/wood anatomy related themes. The idea is for specialists to get together informally on a weekend to discuss issues in the discipline and bring along material for second opinions, comparison etc. The Work Group is aimed primarily at British specialists working on British or international material and anyone, whether freelance or employed in commercial units and universities, or students are welcome. Charcoal specialists from other countries would also be most welcome, but I do not anticipate that anyone should travel specifically for the event.
I am proposing to host the first meeting at Oxford University in conjunction with the Archaeobotany Work Group meeting to be held in late spring (date tbc). The Archaeobotany meeting would be held on the Saturday, with the Charcoal/Wood following on the Sunday. I would like to suggest a broad theme of Methodology, to discuss issues and recent research following the V International Charcoal Meeting in Valencia in September 2011, but am open to other topics people would like to discuss. At this stage, I would like expressions of interest (and any ideas you may have for format or topics) and email addresses so that I can set up a dedicated email list - and avoid clogging up the inboxes of everyone on the Archaeobotany list. On which note, please reply to me off-list to [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask]
