Dear all,
Happy New Year! Here’s a reminder about the next RSS Merseyside local group meeting.
12th January 2012, 14.00 at the University of Liverpool
Statistical Models in Practice
Room 404, Brodie Tower
14:00-15:00 John Copas (Univeristy of Warwick)
How much do conclusions from data depend on the choice of model?
Conventional statistical methods tell us how to allow for uncertainty in the data, but assume that the model is fixed and known. We may confirm that the model is sensible by showing that it gives a good fit to the data. But there can be surprisingly large differences between confidence intervals calculated using different models, even amongst models which fit the data equally well. Examples include different models for binary data, and predicition in multiple regression using subsets of covariates (e.g. selected by a stepwise algorithm). The talk raises some questions about how we use statistical models in practice.
