Further words of encouragement:
My experience of the success of more mature students has been very positive,
indeed with some students nothing short of inspirational. Generally they are
highly motivated and their practice and life experience enhances their
learning. My advice is to identify a course which meets your needs, will
keep you motivated and is as flexible as possible. There are some excellent
MSc courses around, but not that many programmes in Ergonomics.
Organisational psychology may be another option as that specialty shares a
knowledge of human factors.
I suspect that there are not too many courses on your door step so other
things to consider:
Distance learning - Doesn't suit everyone's learning style but is great for
those people who can apply themselves. Birckbeck College (University of
London) used to offer an organisational psychology course by D/L - web link:
http://www.bbk.ac.uk/
Some MSc programmes run on periodic weekly blocks of study. That was how the
MSc programme I completed was delivered. Plus side - you can fit it in with
your other responsibilites and you meet with other students. Down side - a
week out of work means a week of work to catch up on when you return. We
also only had 4 weeks to then submit our assignment. In my view that was too
short a period in which to consolidate learning then catch up on work,
research and write an assignment.
I would also look at the assessment profile of the course ie the balance
between examinations and assignments. Many older students find remembering
facts for examinations more challenging than they would have done when they
were in their 20's.
I hope this encourages you to take on further study.
