Hi,
I am a researcher working for an organisation called IES. We have been commissioned by the Olympic Delivery Authority to do a small piece of exploratory research on their behalf. This will attempt to start discussions about the benefits of a preventative programme of OH within construction by putting some estimates of the economic benefits of their programme of OH together. We already have data collected by the OH providers for the Olympic build phase which will help us to estimate the potential benefits of their work in terms of reduced health exposures. The next step is then to turn this into economic benefits. This is the particularly hard part.
We're trying to put together some indication of how much conditions affecting manual workers reduce their working lives and quality of life so we can try to cost up what preventing people getting these conditions would save. We're particularly interested in conditions that affect construction workers, but some of these are highly specific (eg hand arm vibration syndrome) and at this stage we're really struggling to get any data. Anything you have would therefore be really appreciated.
I wondered whether anyone might be able to help me identify the best source of data for attempting to monetise the benefits. I was hoping that something might be available on, for example:
- the costs of treating different health conditions within the NHS (there are a few key conditions that affect construction workers particularly).
- the estimated reduced working lives (or quality of life) related to having different health conditions.
- the estimated sickness absence times associated with different health conditions.
I thought that these might be the easiest items to quantify initially.
In addition I will be looking at HSE data on the prevalence of different health conditions amongst the construction workforce. If anyone could highlight any other useful research in this area, or anyone for me to contact about this who might be willing to help, that would be much appreciated.
If anyone is able to assist with this could you please contact me off list at:

Many thanks in advance and have a great weekend,
Ben
